An Interview with Retired Pediatric Surgery Innovator Dr. Saad Saad

Dr. Saad Saad, a retired pediatric surgeon and an innovator in the field, recently sat down for an interview with IdeaMensch to discuss his life, his career as a surgeon and the future of medicine. Dr. Saad was first asked when and how he decided to go into the field of medicine, and he replied that in high school, he was actually convinced that he wanted to be an engineer like his brothers. But the scorching Kuwait summers, he said, convinced him that he’d rather work indoors with access to air conditioning–and so he decided he wanted to become a surgeon.

Dr. Saad was then asked about how he stays productive and how he turns ideas into reality. Organization is the key to his productivity, he explained, because it prevents him from procrastinating on assignments. As for bringing ideas to life, Dr. Saad said that research is the most important factor because, “research leads to results.”

When asked what emerging trend in medicine makes him most excited about the future of the field, Dr. Saad answered that the use of genetics to prevent and treat cancer, and other chronic conditions and diseases, excites him most. Finally, he was asked what habits or techniques he used to help himself focus when performing surgeries. Dr. Saad said that the atmosphere of the operating room was crucial, so he never allowed any personal conversations or loud music during a surgery. He was also certain to get plenty of sleep the night before and eat a proper breakfast in the morning. Learn more: https://www.doximity.com/pub/saad-saad-md
